Binos keeper stays humble as top display repels Elgin charge to stretch lead at top

Keeper Blair Currie played down his heroic efforts in keeping Stirling Albion’s unbeaten run alive after producing a trio of top saves to hold off Elgin City’s challenge on Tuesday night.

The Binos had seen off the Black and Whites comfortably 3-0 in the reverse fixture in Moray on Saturday, but found the midweek return at Forthbank a much stiffer task - with the Stirling keeper having to be on the top of his game in the 1-0 win.

Elgin frontman Kane Hester proved a thorn in the side of the home defence all evening but was denied by Currie, thanks to three massive stops from golden chances during the game.

The 29-year-old gloveman, who celebrated signing a two-year extension at Albion at the weekend, said: “You just hope to do your best and for the last one, you just stick your leg out and hope it hits you.

“The boys have dug in and while it wasn’t pretty, you can’t play well in every game. They had a few big players out on Saturday - their right-back, centre-half - so we knew it was going to be a different game, especially if they had a point to prove after playing so well at the weekend in the previous match.”

Binos gaffer Darren Young admitted Elgin would be annoyed at heading home pointless - but praised his side’s grit as they extended their unbeaten run ahead of the visit from in-form East Fife to Stirling on Saturday.

Young said: “With the chances they missed, they could probably come away disappointed but for us, we spoke about if we won this game 1-0 and got a clean sheet before the game, then we would bite your hand off for that.

"It wasn’t the best performance at all and Elgin can feel very hard done by.
