Southampton vs Newcastle United: Lee Ryder's Premier League prediction

We've all heard the tales about wounded animals, haven't we? Well, Newcastle United face a Southampton team that are still reeling from a 4-0 hiding at Aston Villa.

It would be dangerous to read too much into that result given Southampton have lost just once at home all season, way back in September to Wolves courtesy of a Raul Jimenez strike. So Newcastle should need no reminders of what lies in wait here on the South Coast tonight. Ralph Hassenhuttl has relied on a 4-4-2 system on 21 occasions this season and it will be intriguing to see if Eddie Howe rests anybody in this Thursday night fixture or sticks with his winning line-up.

Howe has already confirmed he will be making no changes to his frontline after confirming he will not freshen up his attack and resting Chris Wood.

This is the first of four away fixtures in a row starts against Southampton where a win would nudge Newcastle, impressively, beyond the 30-point barrier. After eight matches unbeaten it feels like a big ask to expect an away victory here but Howe will have done his homework on the Saints.

Southampton have threats all over the pitch but giving away silly free-kicks in the final third is a big no-no with James Ward-Prowse on the loose. Chris Wood is also due a goal so this one could be very interesting if Newcastle can find an early lead.

For all that, a draw would not be a poor result by any stretch of the imagination. I hope I'm wrong and this is another victory but I can see this one being all square because of the tactical acumen of both coaches is capable of conjuring up a stalemate.

Kevin Friend (Leicestershire)
