‘Big battle’ looming between Man Utd and PSG to sign Pogba successor; transfer cost ‘high’

Paul Pogba looks certain to depart Man Utd this summer, and reports from the Italian press suggest expensive PSG target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could fill the void.

Pogba’s contract at Old Trafford will expire this summer and at present, there is little indication he will pen fresh terms. Indeed, his recent remarks when speaking to the French media suggested he won’t look back at his Man Utd career fondly.

“You have to be honest, these last five seasons have not satisfied me — really not at all,” said Pogba.

“This year is dead, we won’t win anything. Whether it’s with Manchester United or another club, I want to win trophies.”

The 28-year-old also explained why he plays better for country rather than club. Yet despite Pogba’s time in Manchester flattering to deceive, he will still leave a hole in United’s midfield that needs to be plugged.

Now, two reports from Italy have put Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the frame to succeed Pogba at Old Trafford.

Links between the Serbian, 27, and United are nothing new. Indeed, barely a transfer window passes by without talk of a transfer taking place.

Nonetheless, when summarising the Italian articles, Sport Witness shed light on why Milinkovic-Savic may finally get his move this summer.

The Serbian is described as the ‘natural heir’ to Pogba in terms of playing style and influence on a squad. In 39 matches this season, Milinkovic-Savic has plundered eight goals and 10 assists.

However, those contributions haven’t been enough to push Lazio higher than seventh in Serie A at present. A summer clear-out could be on the cards to refresh the ranks and Milinkovic-Savic could be the biggest name to make way.
