'Bielsa wanted' two Leeds signings amid issue with Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa wanted two midfielders last month, says transfer insider Pete O’Rourke.

The Whites failed to sign a single player during the January transfer window, but O’Rourke claims Bielsa wanted a couple of fresh faces for the engine room, including someone who could provide cover for Kalvin Phillips.

Very quiet. As already mentioned, the Yorkshire club did not bring anyone in, while young full-back Cody Drameh was the only player to leave Elland Road following his loan move to Cardiff City.

Leeds, however, did at least try to strengthen their squad, with there being plenty of talk about interest in RB Salzburg attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, they made two offers for the 21-year-old, but Salzburg were unwilling to sell.

There was also said to be heavy interest in Raphinha and Phillips, as The Guardian reported that West Ham made two unsuccessful offers for the Leeds duo, so it could have easily been a different transfer window for Bielsa.

O’Rourke has told GIVEMESPORT that Bielsa wanted to sign two midfielders last month as he looked for cover for Phillips, who was the subject of a £50m bid from West Ham.

Speaking to GMS, the football journalist said: “Bielsa wanted two midfielders, possibly one for cover for Kalvin Phillips and also a No.8, which obviously they weren’t able to do.”
