Belgian GP: Lewis Hamilton responds sharply to Fernando Alonso's 'idiot' radio message

Lewis Hamilton has said ‘it’s nice to know’ how Fernando Alonso feels about him after the Spaniard labelled the Brit an idiot.

The two drivers were battling for second place on the run up to Les Combes on the first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix but ended up tangling, with Hamilton retiring soon after because of the damage he sustained and Alonso recovering to an eventual fifth-place finish but certainly still likely disappointed with how things went.

His emotion was plain for all to hear just after the crash, too, with him labelling Hamilton an ‘idiot’ and saying he only knows how to drive when in first place.

The stewards deemed it a racing incident but, in fairness to Hamilton, the Brit took full responsibility for the clash with him speaking to the press once he’d returned to the paddock:

“Looking back at the footage, he was in my blind spot and I didn’t leave enough space today. It was my fault and I couldn’t see him. He was right in my blind spot.”

Hamilton was then asked about the radio message Alonso sent, to which Lewis responded:

“I don’t really have a response to it.

“I know that’s how things feel in the heat the moment, but it’s nice to know how he feels about me in a way, better that it’s out in the open, how he feels.

“Like I said, it wasn’t intentional and I take responsibility for it. That’s what adults do.”
