BBC The One Show viewers left furious as Jamie Oliver cooks 'cheap' meal live on programme

The One Show isn't known for its cooking segments but the show underwent a bit of a change this week as the presenting line-up was treated to various foodie delights from celebrity chefs and bakers - including cake from Mary Berry.

But during Thursday night's edition of the BBC One chat show (September 1), Alex Jones and Ronan Keating appeared in The One Show's very own kitchen with Jamie Oliver. The famous chef was cooking on the show to promote his new book 'One' which is said to be full of 'simple one-pan wonders'.

Jamie’s One-Pan Wonders is also airing on Channel 4 as his latest cooking show sees him whip up dishes from his new book. As he joined Alex and Ronan live on the show, Jamie decided to cook up a sausage and minestrone soup with the hosts following along next to him.

Speaking about his book, Jamie told viewers: "In this book I've used supermarket ingredients...never more than eight ingredients and for now when people are talking about cost of living and stuff like that, most of the recipes are in pans on hobs. So a hob is about four times cheaper than an oven."

Discussing the cost of the dish he was making on the programme, he added: "10 minutes of cooking that's about 10p, actually slightly less, in energy. And this dish with no tweaks is £1.45 per portion."

But those watching at home didn't actually believe that would be the true cost and felt the segment was 'patronising'. @iainm68 tweeted: "£1.45 a portion? Do u know how much parmesan cheese is!!#TheOneShow."

@claretrickett sarcastically commented: "Nothing like a millionaire Jamie Oliver teaching us how to cook for a pound
