Barnsley’s two most underwhelming signings from the last 5 years and why – Do you agree?
Championship outfit Barnsley have given themselves a real chance of remaining afloat in the division following their recent resurgence, though they face a difficult task as they tussle with the likes of Derby County and Reading for safety.
Considering they finished fifth in the second tier last term, their current predicament is a real disappointment for the Tykes’ fans who would have been hoping that 2021/22 was the catalyst for the club to establish itself as a solid Championship side.
Key departures last summer has proven to be costly though – and it may end up costing them their status in their current division if they are unable to recover from last weekend’s loss against local rivals Sheffield United.
Three key figures in particular in former boss Ismael, former captain Alex Mowatt and talisman Daryl Dike were crucial to their cause last term and with all three gone, it’s clear that major change has adversely affected the football club.
They can have no real excuses in terms of the rate of their decline though, currently sitting 17 places below where they finished last season and looking like a completely different team for much of 2021/22, though their January additions have provided them with a much-needed boost. Amine Bassi and Domingos Quina have been two great winter signings thus far.
But focusing on less successful signings, we have identified two players whose moves to Oakwell haven’t worked out over the past five years.
Obbi Oulare
Although he has had less of a chance to shine than others, the fact Oulare has only made two league appearances earns him a place on this list after looking as though he was going to be an important first-teamer at Oakwell.
