Barnsley 0 – 1 Cardiff City: What happened? Who stood out? What are the fans saying?

A goal from Uche Ikpeazu on debut helped Cardiff City claim a vital 1-0 win against relegation rivals Barnsley at Oakwell last night.

The result moves the Bluebirds nine points clear of the bottom three while their hosts remain eight points adrift of safety.

The Tykes may well look at this one as a missed opportunity after controlling the game for long periods but they were unable to make their possession count.

Josh Benson, Devante Cole, and Liam Kitching all failed to make the most of chances in the first half and the home side were made to pay after the break.

Ikpeazu came off the bench in the 63rd minute and eight minutes later scored the decisive goal, turning a wild clearance forward into a dangerous probing ball by nodding it over the top of a defender before collecting himself and rolling his finish past a frozen Brad Collins.

Barnsley thought they scored an equaliser late on when Aaron Leya Iseka found the net but the Oakwell celebrations were soon quietened as it was ruled out for offside.

Things bubbled over after the game as Steve Morison and Tykes assistant Jo Laumann’s scuffle nearly turned into a full-on brawl in the tunnel.

The obvious choice is Ikpeazu as Cardiff’s January signing came from the bench to score the winner on debut. It was a real moment in quality in a scrappy and hard-fought game.

Starting on the right side of the back three once again, Perry Ng produced an impressive, unflappable display for the Bluebirds and looks as though he could be an asset in that position moving forward.
