Barber who made Phil Foden’s hair blonde confesses 'that was not meant to happen'

England's team barber has revealed the surprising backstory to Manchester City ace Phil Foden's platinum blonde hair for Euro 2020.

Sheldon Edwards - better known as HD Cutz - has spoke out on the inspiration for Foden's Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne-inspired haircut that he sported during the last Euros. The style mirrored Gazza's well-recognised bleach-blond look from Euro 96 and Foden successfully replicated it as it went viral on social media during the competition.

Speaking on Reach's new Euro Thrash podcast – which you can find on YouTube, Apple and Spotify – Edwards confessed that what was intended as merely a social media trend ended up becoming something more real.

Edwards said: "It is so funny because that was not meant to happen. I was busy in London and it was pretty late and I had to come up to Manchester. I put a little story up on my Instagram when I put the dye on half of his head and said to him, 'do you know I'm going to do', and it went viral. Straight away people were tagging Gascoigne."

The celebrity barber, who is launching the HD Cutz Academy for those who would like to start their own career in hairstyling, added that Foden saw the fever on social media and decided to just "trust" him.

Edwards said: "Phil, being the person that he is, with Gascoigne being someone that he looked up to, he was excited to see that people were saying that he was doing the Gascoigne and all that sort of stuff. He just trusted me. I gave him a lot of prep before I did that colour, he did not know what he wanted."
