Banyana Banyana in operation stop Super Falcons

After losing 0-1 to the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the first leg of their Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers in Abuja on Friday, coach of Banyana Banyana of South Africa, Desiree Ellis, says her team will get the job done on Tuesday in Pretoria.

A 43rd minute goal from the penalty spot by Atletico Madrid winger, Rasheedat Ajibade, gave Nigeria the edge in the first leg played at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

However, Ellis says she is confident Banyana Banyana will overturn the deficit in the second leg in Pretoria on Tuesday.

In 2016, Ellis led the Banyana Banyana to the African Women Championship in Cameroun, where they lost to the Super Falcons led then by coach Florence Omagbemi in the semifinal in the city of Limbe.

But in 2021, Ellis led the team to Lagos to inflict a 4-1 defeat on the Super Falcons, their biggest fall on home soil from any African team during the final of the Aisha Buhari Cup.

Ellis and her Banyana Banyana side also handed a 2-1 defeat to the Super Falcons in the semifinal of the last African Women Nations Cup, which the South Africans eventually won in Morocco.

The last time the Super Falcons featured in the Olympic Games was at Beijing 2008.

Ellis told Safa.net that the reigning African champions, Banyana Banyana will approach Tuesday’s match in Pretoria with everything saying: “We said it was going to be a tight game in Abuja, but we are hopeful of overturning this result in the second leg.

“We are still in the game. We created a couple of chances, a penalty decided the match but the game is not over. I thought in the second half we raised our game a lot and created good chances and could have equalised.
