Ballymena United boss David Jeffrey welcomes permanent deal for "character" Sean O'Neill

Ballymena United boss David Jeffrey believes he has signed a top goalkeeper in Sean O'Neill and also one of the Irish League's biggest characters.

O’Neill, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Braidmen, joined the Warden Street club on a three-year contract on Thursday night.

The experienced shot stopper, who has parted company with Crusaders after more than a decade, is Ballymena’s fifth signing of a busy summer transfer window so far.

The 34-year-old joins Larne striker David McDaid, Carrick Rangers forward Jordan Gibson, Coleraine midfielder Evan Tweed and Linfield’s Jake Corbett who were all been snapped up this week.

“Sean was here for a period on loan last season and we’re delighted to say he has come back to Ballymena on a permanent basis,” Jeffrey told Ballymena United TV.

“Everyone knows that Sean is a quality goalkeeper. You don’t need me to wax lyrical about what he has achieved or done in the game.

“He fitted in very well here last season and he comes with an enthusiasm. He’s a character, he’s a personality and he is someone who is infectious.

“His arrival really strengthens our goalkeeping position and gives us great competition alongside Jordan Williamson and Sam Johnston.

“Sean isn’t afraid to stand up and be counted and he is a most welcome addition to our squad.”

O’Neill has joined Ballymena for a second spell having also played for the club under Tommy Wright and Roy Walker in the late-2000s.

The former Northern Ireland U21 keeper left for Dungannon Swifts in 2010 before moving to Crusaders where he made 365 appearances over 11 years with the North Belfast club.
