Atletico invite Celtic 'shame game' villain to Madrid showdown as La Liga giants follow up Parkhead kit stunt

Atletico Madrid are set to honour their infamous 1974 clash with Celtic again ahead of their Champions League rematch - inviting shame game bruiser Ruben Ayala to Wanda Metropolotano as their guest of honour.

Record Sport's front page branded the La Liga giants 'Pathetico Madrid' for their antics in the first leg as they wore a red, white and blue kit to honour the 1974 meeting between the two sides in Glasgow. It honoured the infamous European Cup semi-final at Parkhead 49 years ago, although manager Diego Simeone and president Enrique Cerezo defended the move from criticism.

The fiery game at Parkhead in that first meeting was as fitting a tribute as you're likely to see with Rodrigo De Paul sent off as Celtic battled to a 2-2 draw that got them off the mark in the Champions League. They now travel to Madrid with Brendan Rodgers needing another good result to keep their hopes alive of European football after Christmas.

Argentinian hard man Ayala was the first Atletico player sent off in the infamous 1974 clash and two more followed - Ruben Diaz and Enrique Hernandez. They eventually beat Celtic 2-0 in the return leg before going on to lose the first of three finals Atletico have lost in the competition, to Bayern Munich.

Now Ayala, nicknamed the 'Mouse, will be honoured at a special event the night before the group stage match called 'The Return of the Mouse' on Monday. And he will be the guest of honour for the Metropolitano Stadium showdown on Tuesday.

He made 214 appearances for Atletico in seven years and played for Argentina at the 1974 World Cup. He later recalled the Parkhead encounter and said "I got a three-match ban for that game. I got booked twice - I think the first one was for stopping the keeper
