Athlone finish with a flourish to seal President's Cup

Athlone Town secured their second successive Women's President's Cup with a 3-0 victory over Peamount United at Athlone Town Stadium.

A week before the start of the Premier Division, the FAI Cup winners downed the league champions with a powerful second-half display.

Casey Howe was prominent for the hosts in the opening 45 minutes, but it remained deadlocked as the sides retired to the dressing rooms.

The Peas, who lost just two league game in 2023 and beat Athlone Town in both of their league encounters on an aggregate score of 8-4, couldn’t break down the hosts’ stubborn defence on the day.

With 20 minutes to go, Athlone were awarded a penalty but Peamount keeper Niamh Reid-Burke pulled off a save to keep it scoreless.

The breakthrough arrived five minutes later courtesy of Chloe Singleton after industrious work from Madie Gibson.

Singleton doubled their advantage eight minutes later before Howe put the result beyond Peamount in the 86th minute by putting it through the legs of Reid-Burke in goals.
