Aston Villa: High-profile 50 y/o 'would be attracted' by replacing Gerrard

Aston Villa would be an ‘attractive’ proposition for former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 50-year-old tactician has been linked with taking over the reins at Villa Park in recent days following the club’s slow start to the season under current boss Steven Gerrard.

Villa have only won one of their opening six Premier League games in 2022/23 despite bringing in several exciting acquisitions over the summer.

Gerrard spent around £60 million in the previous transfer window, securing the signatures of Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos and Leander Dendoncker, while Boubacar Kamara arrived on a free.

However, a string of poor performances and even more disappointing results have seen the pressure mount on the former Rangers chief as discontent amongst the fan base grows.

And The Athletic’s reliable reporter David Ornstein told the Overlap Review that Pochettino ‘would consider’ taking charge of a club outside of the Premier League’s top six when asked about the Argentine and Villa.

Football Insider previously claimed that the South American is on the Villans’ radar, and if Gerrard cannot turn things around quickly, Pochettino could be approached in the near future.

O’Rourke believes Villa and their ‘very rich owners’ could entice Pochettino back to the Premier League almost three years after he was sacked by Tottenham.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “I’m sure that Villa would be something that will be attractive to the likes of Mauricio Pochettino.

“They’re a big club, they have a big fanbase as well, and they’ve got very rich owners who have backed their managers in the transfer market.”
