Aston Villa fans 'not buying' new transfer claims over Newcastle United's Matt Targett move

Newcastle United are targeting a last-minute January transfer for Aston Villa's Matt Targett amid fresh claims they hope to take him on loan until the end of the season.

According to transfer journalist Pete O'Rourke, the Magpies are keen to wrap up a deal in a busy weekend that has seen them strengthen their squad significantly.

Earlier in the day, the Athletic had reported that Eddie Howe wants to add the full-back to bolster his defensive options with the club fighting against relegation to the Championship.

But reacting on social media, Villa fans do not see the point of sending the left-back to Newcastle on a temporary deal.

Here's what they had to say on Twitter.

"Not buying this one. The only way he leaves this window is if there's a big offer to buy and we get another LB in. A big part of why we bought Digne is so we didn't have Ashley Young as our only backup there. He'll go in the summer, possibly, but not sooner."

"This is so stupid? So much for having a big squad, so who’s the back up left back now?"

: "Can't see this happening and if so then where's the fight for him to win his shirt back, surely we bought Digne to add depth."

"I don’t see the point in a loan for him, we would only have Digne and if he got injured who would we have?"

"Don’t get this whatsoever."

"Loan does not make sense when we know Newcastle are minted with cash. I like Targett, but he will be second choice now after Digne."

"Seems like a pointless move, unless we're hoping he has a mad couple of months and we'll cash in this summer."

"No, not having that, makes zero sense, and why on earth do we want to aid their survival hopes? They go down the sooner we can push for Europe before they start splashing serious cash."
