‘Assist king’ on Everton radar but Southampton in picture for former Chelsea, Man Utd target
Everton and Southampton have been tipped as a possible next destination for Anderlecht star Sergio Gomez despite links to Chelsea and Manchester United.
The 21-year-old is in his first season with the Belgian giants after moving to Lotto Park from Borussia Dortmund last summer. And he has been a standout player for Vincent Kompany in 2021-2022. The Spain Under-21 ace has started all 26 of his side’s Jupiler Pro League matches, scoring five goals.
Able to operate and left-back or as an attacking left-sided player, he has also registered an eye-catching 11 assists this term. That put him in the crosshairs of Chelsea in December.
The European champions were linked with the former Barcelona youth star during the January transfer window. However, he remained in his present surroundings and continues to shine for the Purple & White.
United were mentioned in connection with Gomez back in December. And Barca are also said to be interested in their former player.
It seems inevitable that the versatile star will move on and Voetbal Nieuws (via Sport Witness) are suggesting two Premier League clubs are eager. The report states that ‘it seems unlikely’ he will move to one of the three giants previously linked.
The Toffees and Saints are ‘more realistic’ future clubs. Signed for just £2m, his valuation is ‘estimated at €9m these days’ – not a figure that would scare the English duo.
That would represent a tidy profit for Anderlecht who may cash in on the Spaniard this summer.
Everton sold Lucas Digne to Aston Villa last month after his falling out with Rafa Benitez. Frank Lampard is now in the Goodison hotseat and has Vitaliy Mykolenko filling the left-back berth.
