Assessing Blackpool striker options after Accrington striker deal falls through

Blackpool still have plenty of work to do in the transfer market should they wish to be ready for Reading on July 30.

The Seasiders recently, as per Blackpool Gazette, opted to pull out of a deal for Accrington Stanley striker Colby Bishop after agreeing personal terms and a fee. Evidently, this shows that Michael Appleton would like to add to his options in the number nine role despite the fact Blackpool are already well stocked in that area of the field.

Whilst other positions will be seen as higher priorities, Appleton's 4-3-3 needs specialists in important areas and centre forward is one of the vital components for ensuring the play remains fluid, particularly in the build-up. With full back another priority as Blackpool await news on whether their second bid for Shamrock Rovers defender Andy Lyons will be accepted, adding another striker could well help take the Seasiders to the next level.

Yates had a frustrating time towards the back end of last season under Neil Critchley with limited minutes on the field. Now under new management, Yates does appear to be a better fit for Appleton's 4-3-3 than any of the other options at the club. He is a well balanced forward who is able to link with advanced midfielders whilst holding an ability to run in behind when required.

He is a relatively intelligent player positionally too both in and out of possession which aids Appleton when looking for his side to press in certain areas. It will be an important season for Yates' future and where exactly he stands amongst the other strikers in the division, but certainly he looks most likely to hold down
