Asda's yellow 'Just Essentials' range - 15 products tried and tested

As the cost of living crisis continues, many shoppers are swapping out their usual big names for supermarket own brands. However, Asda came under fire this week for ‘embarrassing poorer families’ with some of their new products.

The supermarket recently redesigned their savers range - which replaced Smart Price products - which has bright yellow packaging which some shoppers feel stands out too much. It reportedly acts as a ‘poverty marker’, matching the colour of the store’s reduced stickers for nearly out of date food.

However, Asda defended the packaging, saying that people should not be “embarrassed for saving money."

Asda said its Just Essentials line is the “largest ever budget-friendly range” to help shoppers combat rising costs, comprising of nearly 300 products so far. Wales Online journalist Branwen Jones decided to put the products to the test by picking up a selection of the new range to try out for herself.

Here's how she got on...

Branwen said: “ I tried the controversial range to see if shoppers were getting their money's worth. During my grocery shop, I was shocked by how low prices from this range actually were. Bearing in mind that I wasn't doing a family shop, for 15 items and two bags for life - my shop came to a total of £14.97.

"More importantly however, most of the items that I bought were of good quality, especially the fruit and vegetables, and I would definitely buy most of these items again."

To start things off, I tried the orange juice. 69p for a one litre carton was more than a bargain and the taste was really good. It's fresh, zingy flavour balanced well with the acidity.
