ASDA hit with angry complaints over 'ridiculous' name change of popular aisle

Supermarket giant ASDA has come under fire from some shoppers after changing the name of one of its most important aisles.

Since the end of 2021, the retailer has been rolling out changes to signs above its feminine hygiene products.

In an attempt to update the language it uses, and to direct away from the notion that periods are 'unhygienic', ASDA now has signs saying 'period products' instead.

The term feminine is also seen to be outdated by many, and could be harmful to those who don't identify as women but still need to use period products.

Posting on Twitter, period charity Binti International wrote: "Thank you and a massive Shout out to @asda for leading the way in changing the language around menstruation. #PeriodProducts #MenstrualProducts sanitary hygiene or feminine hygiene suggests menstrual products are for something dirty. Time to change the language. #SmashShame."

The post was met with a positive response from some people, with many thanking ASDA for making the change.

However, the name change hasn't gone down so well with everyone.

When the Manchester Evening News shared the story on Facebook, it was met with some heavy criticism.

Responding to the post, Val Walker said: "Ridiculous. Why keep pandering to all the Snowflakes out there. Should ASDA change its name as well. It stands for Associated Dairy's. Nothing to do with the farmers who created it now! Blimey will the Vegans now get on board because they don't eat dairy!!!"

Amanda Stephens commented: "Feminine hygiene covered a wide range of products ... we have mens toiletries so why not just change it to womens toiletries?"
