Arsenal waiting for green light to launch Memphis Depay bid as Barcelona ponder sale

Arsenal could be in line to get their hands on Memphis Depay this summer with Barcelona reportedly pondering the sale of the Dutch striker.

The former Manchester United flop only arrived at the Camp Nou last summer after leaving Lyon on a free transfer. Barca though only handed the 28-year-old a two-year deal, meaning he could walk away for free next summer.

Depay hit 12 goals from 28 games in a season in which was hit by Achilles tendon and hamstring injuries. He was forced to sit out nine games in LaLiga and he was played in a number of positions towards the end of the season by Xavi.

His efforts in Catalonia have prompted interest from England, according to Fabrizio Romano last month.

While the Spanish publication ABC later reported that Arsenal has made an enquiry for the attacker.

Now Barcelona are looking at adding to their forward line, with Robert Lewandowski their prime target.

That news has not persuaded Depay to move on through, instead the Holland star is keen to stay with Barca.

During a recent interview, he said: “I came here at Barcelona with the desire to play for the team – and of course I want to feel important here for several years.”

But, according to Sport, via Sport Witness, Barca could decide to cash in on the former PSV star. As long as a deal is an “attractive” proposal to Barca they could “opt for his sale”.

That would help the Catalan giants fund moves for Lewandowski and Leeds star Raphinha.

The arrival of those two would also leave Depay’s game time severely impacted.

Of course Depay has one eye on the Qatar World Cup in November and December. And his prime consideration is match time ahead of the Dutch squad being announced.
