Former Leeds United and Derby County striker Noel Whelan thinks Arsenal may move to sign Ollie Watkins from Villa if they feel he can be improved.

Watkins has been linked with a move to Arsenal with debate about the striker's future at Villa intensifying in recent weeks.

The 26-year-old ended a six-match run without a goal when he scored the second in Villa's 2-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Watkins has competition in Danny Ings this season with Gerrard preferring a formation that leads with one striker.

Gerrard will oversee his first summer market as Villa boss once the season ends and it is expected that his side will be busy.

The Villa manager will have been promised substantial backing in the transfer window having already seen his side's financial capabilities first-hand in the January window when Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho were among the players brought in.

Villa, currently 13th in the Premier League table, can still finish in the top half this season but need to find form again to end the campaign strongly.
