Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema reaches historic WSL milestone after goal against Birmingham

Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema became the first player in Women’s Super League history to register 100 goal involvements after she scored in the Gunners 4-2 win against Birmingham City.

Jonas Eidevall’s side survived a scare against the league’s bottom-placed team, to pick up a crucial three points, which sees them move eight points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table.

The Blues do have three games in hand on their London rivals, but in a season that has provided endless twists and turns, the Gunners will be satisfied with their lead as it stands.

New signing Rafaelle Souza scored her first goal for Arsenal to open the scoring at Meadow Park.

It was then Miedema’s turn to get in on the action. The Dutch forward pounced on a loose ball and slotted past Marie Hourihan to double the Gunners’ advantage.

The goal was Miedema’s 70th in the WSL, to go along with her 30 assists. More significant, was that this was the 25-year-old’s 100th goal contribution in total –– making her the first player in the league’s history to achieve this feat.

Remarkably, the striker has reached this milestone in just 83 appearances, meaning she averages more than a goal or an assist every game.
