Mikel Arteta would have happily taken fifth place and European football at the start of the season.

But having had a Champions League spot within their grasp, to blow up in such spectacular fashion means the season will be remembered with disappointment and a sense of what might have been. The players will finish the season running on empty, they have nothing left in the tank and, barring a last day miracle, have been unable to summon one last effort to get themselves back into fourth place.

Arsenal’s shortcomings are obvious and can be traced back to January when they took a huge gamble in the transfer window - and it has come back to bite them. They let Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang go to Barcelona on a free but he had fallen out of favour, fallen out with the manager and no-one with any knowledge of the whole situation will think that was a mistake. No, the mistake was not getting another striker in.

And they let so many squad players go - Calum Chambers, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Pablo Mari, Sead Kolasinac and Folarin Balogun - and, while few would have started games, they could have played minutes here and there to give others a rest. Instead, Thomas Partey was having to play every minute, injured his thigh at Crystal
