Arsenal's major Viktor Gyokeres breakthrough makes Manchester United transfer decision clear

Manchester United's route in their pursuit of signing a new centre-forward should start to become clearer in the coming days and weeks.

The news that Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres should end talk of the Swedish international making the move to Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old's goalscoring record in Portugal was extraordinary and it was playing under United boss Ruben Amorim where he became one of the most feared forwards in Europe.

But it looks like North London will be his next destination, rather than the North West, with the Athletic reporting the former Coventry City man is in advanced talks with the Gunners.

A fee hasn't been agreed between the two clubs but personal terms are in place and the deal is progressing towards a conclusion.

It means United's search for a proven goalscorer will take them in a different direction. They have been linked with Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike and even free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But if United want to make a transformative signing up front, for a player with proven goalscoring experience across several European leagues, then their number one target now should be a move for Napoli forward Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen is available for transfer this summer as he is not part of Antonio Conte's plans. He spent last season on loan at Galatasaray where his 37 goals in all competitions helped them win the Turkish Super Lig and the Turkish Cup.

The 26-year-old has won the Golden Boot in Serie A and the Super Lig and also scored goals regularly in Ligue 1 while playing for French side Lille.
