Arndale's resurgence hits milestone as centre comes back from major setbacks

Manchester’s post-pandemic retail resurgence hit a major milestone today, as the Arndale confirmed it has now replaced the units vacated by the former Arcadia group.

The shopping centre has today (September 26) announced that shoe shop Dune is moving into the mall, taking over a section of the former Topshop unit. The firm has signed a five-year lease for the 1,596 sq ft store.

Dune’s arrival brings the Arndale’s occupancy rate to 95 percent. Its presence, combined with the new Nike store — and openings of Clarks and Gilly Hicks — means the centre has now occupied all the space left vacant by the collapse of Arcadia.

Arcadia, owned by Sir Philip Green, imploded in late 2020, which led to Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins, and Burton falling into administration. It ran 444 stores in the UK and 22 overseas, with roughly 50 of those in Greater Manchester, including the Arndale.

Despite the collapse and pandemic hitting the Arndale less than three years ago, it has seen a slew of new openings this year. They include The North Face, Sunglasses Hut, Nike, Oseyo, Black Sheep Coffee, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Lazy Sundae, Slim Chickens and Tim Hortons.

“Our approach not only seeks to strengthen footfall but also drive demand for well-placed units, taking our retail occupancy close to 95 percent,” said Steve Gray, Head of European Retail Asset Management at Global Mutual — the firm which looks after the centre.
