Armed police in standoff with 'man with handgun' as area cordoned off

A street was cordoned off amid an armed police standoff with a 'man with a handgun' in Leeds. The major operation took place in the Half Mile Green area of Stanningley on Sunday (June 9) as dozens of armed police officers flooded the street.

Police were called to a 'domestic-related' incident at a property shortly after midday. However, officers later 'withdrew' after seeing a man in possession of 'what appeared to be a handgun'.

Pictures from the scene showed ambulances, an incident response unit and multiple police vehicles in attendance. A large cordon was put in place amid the incident. A drone was also deployed over the area.

Armed police were later seen outside the property in talks with the suspect inside. Further details have not yet been released about the incident.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "A police operation is currently ongoing at an address in Half Mile Green, Stanningley.

"At 12.36pm today, officers were called to a domestic-related incident at the property but withdrew on seeing a male at the address in possession of what appeared to be a handgun.

"A cordon is currently in place and various emergency service resources, including police negotiators, are at the scene working to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

"The male is the only person in the address and there is no risk to the wider community."
