Armagh's Aimee Mackin to make surprise move to AFL

Armagh star Aimee Mackin has made the decision to join her sister Bláithín at Melbourne AFL's women's team, days after indicating that such a move was unlikely.

The 2020 Footballer of the Year is a surprise capture for Melbourne and will link up with the AFL outfit following the conclusion of this year's All-Ireland Championship.

Mackin has been constantly linked with a move to Australia but as recently as this week was asked about the prospect of such a move and replied "No, probably not. I'm just focusing on Armagh and that's my main priority."

However the temptation to join her sister Bláithín and Dublin star Sinéad Goldrick at the Demons proved too tempting to resist.

"I'm really excited and thankful for the opportunity that Melbourne Demons have given me," Mackin said.

"It’s extra special that I’ll get to play alongside my sister and I’m really looking forward to working with all the staff and players for the 2023 season.

"It was a big decision for me, and I’m delighted to have the support from my county Armagh and my club Shane O’Neill’s here in Ireland. Things have moved really fast to make this happen and I’m grateful for their support.

"My focus remains on our GAA campaign, and we will be hoping to give it our best shot this season. I look forward to joining my Melbourne teammates later in the year. Go Dees."
