Aritz Aduriz is the proud owner of arguably the most casual penalty we've ever seen

Aritz Aduriz never seem to get the credit that he deserved.

It’s now been two years since the Spanish striker hung up his boots and we continue to be disappointed by the lack of praise he receives for a pretty darn impressive career.

Just because he never reached the world-beating heights of, say, Fernando Torres or David Villa, that shouldn’t take away from the fact that he was a reliable goalscorer in the Spanish game.

And perhaps the most remarkable thing about Aduriz’s career at the top was how he aged like a fine wine, producing some of his greatest ever seasons during his third spell at Athletic Bilbao.

In fact, when Aduriz reached the high watermark of his career with 36 goals for the Basque club during the 2015/16 season, he did so when he was 34 and 35 years old.

So when the 13-cap Spain international drew the curtains on his career in the 2019/20 campaign with a bicycle kick against Barcelona no less, he was knocking on the door of his 40th birthday.

However, of all the brilliant moments that Aduriz produced during what was simultaneously the twilight and peak of his career, we like to think that his penalty Real Valladolid took the biscuit.

‘How could a penalty really be the highlight?’ we hear you ask… well, that’s because Aduriz happened to find the back of the net from 12 yards in pretty unique circumstances.

That’s because the Athletic Club hero decided to take the spot-kick as though he was playing five-a-side football despite usually taking his penalties like, erm, anybody else would: with a run-up.

But alas, with the scores locked at 0-0 during the La Liga clash in December 2018, Aduriz was clearly feeling like mixing things up and duly produced one of the most casual penalties of all time.
