'Annoying and embarrassing' — Manchester United fans fume amid Darwin Nunez to Liverpool news

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer. With Cristiano Ronaldo only having one year left on his contract, the club needed reinforcements in that area, however it seems United may have been beaten in the race for the Uruguayan striker.

The Manchester Evening News understands that although United were interested in Nunez, they're reluctant to get drawn into a transfer battle with Liverpool for the striker. And, it seems that the Anfield club are making strides towards the signing.

According to multiple news outlets Liverpool are willing to break their transfer record for Nunez and could offer a deal that would see them spend £86m total on the player. And of course, the player wants to play in the Champions League next season, something that United can not offer.

United fans are understandably unhappy with the news. Many had hoped that Nunez would join the club after weeks of speculation, but Liverpool swooping in and seemingly tying up a deal in a few days has caused many United fans to show their disillusionment with the club's business. The frustration comes amid United's interest in Jurrien Timber and Frenkie de Jong, two players on the club's radar but whose deals are not imminent.

The fans made their thoughts known on social media. This is a selection of their responses:
