Annan Athletic boss refuses to be too despondent after Alloa defeat

Annan player boss Wullie Gibson refused to be too despondent after defeat.

He saw his side lose to a fierce first half strike by Stefan Scougall and later said: “It was not a one-sided game, so you cannot be too down or critical.

“It was like the old saying, it was a game of two halves. Alloa were on top in the first and we were by far the better team and on top for the whole of the second half.

“We just couldn’t get the equaliser. It’s frustrating.

Alloa are one of the favourites to win this league.

“They were yards ahead of us in the first half. We were not at the races, but in the second half we got to grips with it.

“It’s frustrating (to lose) because we have had the opportunities and on another day we maybe score two or three. But to lose the game is frustrating.”

Annan were missing four regular players, but Gibson declined to pin the loss on the casualty count.

He added: “I don’t want to put it down to injuries because I always believe that is why you assemble a squad, to cope with the injuries.

“But, for the injuries that we have got at the moment: Rico Quitongo, Paul Smith, Josh Todd, Aidan Smith and that’s four players straight away from your starting line up.

“Aidan and Josh are two big players for us with their contributions and experience and communication and we were quiet.

“I just felt the communication was missing and we have got a very young team and we need to learn from that and progress.”

Gibson reflected on Galabankies’ start to the season and said: “After two weeks we were sitting top of the league with six points and after four games we are sitting with two wins and two losses. But I am reasonably happy where we are.

“We just need to win as many games as possible.”
