Ange Postecoglou's Celtic success inspires old club as go green to pay tribute to favourite former son

Ange Postecoglou has proved an inspiration to so many in Australia with his exploits at Celtic during his seven months at Parkhead.

And the 56-year-old’s work in Scotland has been recognised more at one of his former clubs Down Under than anywhere else.

That is why South Melbourne FC have taken the step of paying tribute to the man who came through the ranks at the Lakeside Stadium to make it to the first team and later managed.

The club, who play in all blue strips, have introduced a new green goalkeeper top for the coming National Premier Leagues Victoria season.

They wrote on social media under the new kit: "Inspired by Ange Postecoglou and his current journey over at @CelticFC, we bring to you our Goalkeeper Jersey for the 2022 NPL Victoria season."

And it has gone down well, even with Celtic fans with one commenting on the club’s social media: “LOVE! Do you do shipping to Bonnie Scotland”

South Melbourne, who Postecoglou led to four titles, were beaming with pride when the former Australia national team boss, landed the job in the east end of Glasgow.

On their Facebook account, the club said: “Congratulations to our favourite son Ange Postecoglou who has been officially appointed as the new manager of Celtic FC.

“We have no doubt Ange will succeed as he has done over the past three decades, including with our own club in the National League.”

Postecoglou has spoken previously of how his old club Down Under share the same ethos as his current team.

He said: “I’m well aware of Celtic’s background. I love the fact that it was built in a similar sort of light to the club that helped us as a family in Australia – South Melbourne Hellas. So those kinds of things are really important to me.”
