Andy Robertson injury latest as Liverpool 'hopeful' Scotland skipper has avoided serious damage

Liverpool and Scotland are hopeful that Andy Robertson has avoided serious injury.

The Scotland captain was forced off in the first half of his nations' abject 1-0 friendly defeat to Northern Ireland on Wednesday. Robertson went down with an ankle injury, but played on after seeming to recover thanks to treatment. But the pain proved too much for the Reds full back and he limped off to compound a miserable night for Steve Clarke. The sight caused understandable worry amongst the Tartan Army and Liverpool fans, who have already had to do without the former Dundee United and Hull defender this season.

He missed several months earlier in the campaign and with a title race firmly on in Jurgen Klopp's final fling, the Anfield club are optimistic that Robertson's season isn't over. That would be good news north of the border as well. With the Euro 2024 opener against Germany in Munich less than three months away, Scotland are desperate for the skipper to be fit enough for the finals this summer.

He returned to Merseyside on Wednesday and was set to undergo a scan in order to assess any damage. The Daily Mail report that Liverpool remained hopeful of a positive prognosis and that Robertson would feature again before the end of the current campaign.

Kieran Tierney deputised at left back in Robertson's absence but with Aaron Hickey seemingly touch and go, Clarke can ill afford his other first choice full back or wing back unavailable.
