Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin get caught up in Twitter war-of-words

Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin have reignited their war of words on social media.

Boxing Hall of Famer Ward took part in a fan Q&A on Twitter yesterday when he was asked if there was one fight he wanted before he retired.

He tweeted: “Froch, rematch in the UK; Golovkin, he turned it down in less than 5 minutes, Anthony Joshua, but I retired.”

Golovkin fired back – claiming that Ward was just using his name to keep himself relevant after he announced his massive unification fight against former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux in October 2015 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

He replied: “Andre, stop lying to the fans.

“Your team made the offer AFTER I announced the fight with Lemieux and sold out MSG.

“You are still angry since that you never sold tickets like me. HBO knew you used the offer for publicity to move to 175. Happy Birthday.”

Ward then labelled Golovkin ‘Lil G’ – referring to his ring name Triple G – belittle his would-be opponent.

He wrote in reply: “Lil g [sic] come on man. Stop it.”

Ward wasn’t done there either as he threatened to expose their email correspondence.

He added: “I have receipts stop playing.”

Golovkin’s manager Tom Loeffler then defended his client after accusing Ward of being jealous of his success.

He quickly responded: “Andre, you’ve had a great career.

“I see it still bothers you that a fighter with broken English is way more successful in the USA than you were as a gold medallist.

“You should release the emails about the offer and my response to your team.”

Ward’s response was: “Stand down Tom, you’re a civilian.”

However, Loeffler could not resist having the final word, pointing out Ward was actually the one who started it all in the first place.
