Andre Onana's transfer value is plummeting - he could cost Man United a fortune

He may not outwardly admit it but Nemanja Matic would have smiled to himself as he left the Groupama Stadium late on Thursday night going into Friday morning.

Arguably, Matic was proven right in the most definitive way possible as he saw Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana make not one but two costly errors on the way to a 2-2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League. Both led to goals that should have been avoided and while United remain favourites to progress, they should be sleeping a lot easier.

His first could be argued as being unfortunate for a goalkeeper. As the ball was whipped in, the Cameroonian could have been anticipating a touch which never came.

Once he tried to save it, it was too late. Caught in two minds, Onana neither claimed the ball nor did he push it away - instead he watched on as it nestled in the back of the net.

Perhaps Onana would have been given the benefit of the doubt had it not been for the final act of this pulsating contest. Joshua Zirkzee's header looked to have won the game for the Reds only for Onana to spill a shot straight at him to the feet of Rayan Cherki who did the rest.

This time there was no place for the benefit of the doubt - it was a poor blunder that simply cannot be made at this level. It is hard to have little sympathy for a player when it isn't their night but when you purposefully provoked the opposition when you and your team's performances are not up to scratch, it is easy not to shed a tear.

I believe Onana's first comments about Lyon were misinterpreted by Matic but why did he think to stir the pot again? He should have just left the matter where it was.
