NEW YORK: Vlatko Andonovski has stepped down as coach of the United States women's national team, US Soccer confirmed on Thursday (Aug 17), after the four-time champions produced their worst-ever performance at a Women's World Cup, exiting in the round of 16.

Multiple US media outlets had reported the news of his departure on Wednesday.

Assistant coach Twila Kilgore will take the interim head coach role while US Soccer searches for a permanent replacement. The team have a pair of friendlies against South Africa set for Sep 21 and 24.

"Vlatko worked tirelessly for this team and has been a strong and positive leader for our women's program," said US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker.

"We're grateful for everything he has contributed to US Soccer and know he has a bright future in the sport."

Jill Ellis, who was in charge of the US winning campaigns in 2015 and 2019, told reporters in Sydney on Thursday that while a search for a replacement
