Ander Herrera gives verdict on Manchester United's Premier League chances

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes Erik ten Hag's side have a good chance of catching Manchester City in the Premier League this season.

Herrera came off the bench for Athletic Bilbao on Sunday as the Reds left it late to draw 1-1 with their La Liga opponents. A mistake from Harry Maguire on the half hour mark led to the Basque side taking the lead through Nico Williams.

Bilbao were down to ten men on 66 minutes as Aitor Paredes denied Hannibal Mejbri a goalscoring opportunity. The resistance from Herrera's side eventually ran out deep into stoppage time when Maguire atoned for his earlier error by setting up Facundo Pellistri for the equaliser.

Post-match, the 33-year-old admitted he was impressed by United and feels they are on the right path for the upcoming campaign. He told MUTV: "I want to be optimistic, I watched the game yesterday and the second half was fantastic at Old Trafford. I think today we [Bilbao] also played a good game.

"It is true after the red card we were tired and we just couldn’t defend enough and United scored a goal. Of course I am optimistic, I try to always be like this at the beginning of the season.

"Last year United improved a lot and I think they are close to reaching Manchester City and I am going to support from Bilbao and hopefully we can both have a fantastic season."
