Amazon 'prepare' ambitious Premier League rights bid as streaming giants set to challenge Sky and TNT Sports dominance

Amazon are looking to end the stranglehold of Sky and TNT Sports on coverage of the English Premier League by launching an ambitious bid for more rights.

The streaming giant already hold a cluster of games from England's top flight via Prime Video, but do not have anywhere near the number of matches available to stream live as their broadcasting rivals. Sky's flagship Super Sunday show and Monday Night Football have been staples of the Premier League for years, with TNT often broadcasting early and evening games on Saturday, while holding the exclusive rights of the Europa Conference League, the Europa League, and the Champions League in the UK. Meanwhile Sky have a stranglehold over the Scottish Premiership rights after a new deal was agreed last year.

But now according to The Telegraph, backed by billionaire Jeff Bezos, Amazon are not out of the running in an attempt to gazump the broadcasting titans ahead of a major shakeup of TV rights. It was reported fans could expect 25 per cent more games to be broadcast live, with some even mooting the end of the Saturday 3pm TV blackout.

The streaming giant want to prepare a bid for the next four year cycle, and are interest in buying a 'pack' that could see the number of games they can broadcast increase. Emerging streaming site DAZN are also in the hunt and both are said to be appealing to the new system which kicked in last month.

Amazon's share could increase to 65 live games from 42, while TNT currently has 52 live matches per season. The new tender process will now see 270 of the Premier League’s 380 matches per season being sold, which is an increase of 70 more games being broadcast live.
