Always do this one thing after eating to make your teeth white, dentist says

A dentist has shared her top tip for achieving 'whiter teeth, avoiding bad breath and reducing the risk of getting cavities'. It's quite simple to add into your daily life and everyone that does will benefit, she says.

Dr Shaadi Manouchehri highlighted the importance of drinking water, especially after meals. "Your teeth are basically going to thank you," she said.

On her TikTok page, the dentist explained: "Once you've had your meal or your snack or your coffee/tea, it's very important that you drink or sip water. This is going to help clear everything away a lot quicker.

"It's also going to make sure your body is producing the right amount of saliva to be able to clear whatever you've taken in from your teeth a lot quicker," reports the Express.

She added: "Now, for those people who will go grab a toothbrush and toothpaste to brush their teeth after having something to eat or drink - that is incorrect. Put that toothbrush down."

The dentist warned against over-brushing, and the fact you're "actually wearing away your enamel and your gums" if you do that. According to the NHS, enamel cannot grow back if its damaged or worn away so it's very important to look after it as failing to do so will lead teeth appearing more yellow and feeling more sensitive.

She said: "You don't need to brush any more than twice a day for two minutes. If you brush more you're going to damage your teeth and gums.

"What you can do instead is just drink water. If you really, really want a little refresh, use mouthwash but no abrasive toothbrushing because that can be quite damaging."

To maintain optimal oral health, it's advised to book regular appointments with your dentist. Typically recommended every six months, these check-ups are crucial
