Ally McCoist reveals gnawing fear about Rangers title romp and wonders if 55 happened because grounds were empty

Upfront Ally McCoist admits he is starting to fear Rangers' unbeaten romp to a 55th title was due to the fact supporters were locked out of stadiums due to Covid.

Steven Gerrard masterminded a season for the ages as they denied Celtic a 10th consecutive title, wiping out the competition and winning the Premiership by 25 points. The domination was pronounced but that title win now appears a singular act of defiance rather than a sea change in Glasgow. Celtic have won 12 out of the last 13 titles and they are primed and ready to extend their dominance after opening up a five-point lead following Sunday's 3-0 trouncing.

Now McCoist has revealed for the first time he can see merit in the theory which Celtic fans raised over Gerrard and Rangers' defining season. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "Do you know what someone said to me? I brushed it off at the time, and that particular season was a fantastic achievement, but I just wonder if the fact there was no people at the games did help Rangers more than I thought.

"I felt it wouldn't have made that much of a difference, but I look at some of the players now and I think they are affected by it and don't seem to be handling the pressure. Maybe that season, playing behind closed doors actually suited them."
