Allan McGregor to face Napoli as Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst places trust in Jon McLaughlin replacement

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has revealed goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin is set to miss their clash with Napoli – with Allan McGregor set to start between the sticks against the Serie A leaders.

Speculation over the fitness of the Ibrox number one ramped up after McLaughlin missed training with the rest of the group ahead of Wednesday night's crucial Group A clash, and Van Bronckhorst has now admitted the Scotland call up will miss the visit of the Serie A leaders. McLaughlin, who has been included in Steve Clarke's Scotland squad on Tuesday for the Nations League fixtures, appeared to be in discomfort during the 4-0 loss in Amsterdam.

But the 40-year-old is set to receive his chance to stake a claim to once again be named Rangers number one against Napoli. Ahead of Champions League matchday two, Van Bronckhorst refused to put a timeline on his return from injury but backed McGregor for a big display on Tuesday. He said: "McLaughlin has picked up an injury and will not be involved.

"It is different for Allan (McGregor) this season, he has still been the same in training. I have every faith in him tomorrow with the experience he has. No doubt in my mind that he will perform tomorrow."

Having agreed a one-year contract extension to remain at the club this summer, McGregor has warmed the bench. His only game time came in the Premier Sports Cup win over Queen of the South. James Tavernier is also back for Rangers after being replaced by Leon King against Ajax at half-time.
