Rangers explain Roy Maakay absence from Champions League clashes as they grant coach compassionate leave

Rangers say they hope to welcome coach Roy Maakay back soon after confirming he has taken compassionate leave.

The Dutchman is one of boss Gio van Bronckhorst 's closest right-hand men but fans have been left puzzled by his absence in the dugout for the recent Champions League defeats to Ajax and Napoli. The coach was not in the dug-out during the two European clashes that saw Rangers concede seven without managing to score a single goal themselves.

It means that Ibrox outfit have suffered three heavy defeats in their last three matches, with the 4-0 thrashing at Celtic coming before the disappointing Champions League double. And Gio van Bronckhorst has faced the two matches without his fellow countryman. Maakay's absence had some questioning his position at the club going forward. However, a spokesperson for the club has now confirmed the Bayern Munich legend is dealing with a personal matter.

The spokesman said: "Roy Makaay is dealing with a family health issue. We are all supporting him and hope to welcome him back soon."
