I played in so many of these occasions and there are few better stadiums than Ibrox for creating that special atmosphere when big clubs come to town.

That said, never once did I have the luxury of having a 3-0 cushion for a return-leg.

What a night. It was another unforgettable Thursday for a side transformed under the floodlights.

Red Star were an unknown quantity, nobody knew too much about them.

The one thing Gio van Bronckhorst, the players and the fans did appreciate is that they would be coming up against a quality team.

Even in a 3-0 defeat, make no mistake, the Serbs showed they are a decent side. Forget the comfort of the scoreline for a minute, they are no run-of-the-mill outfit.

There are more than enough threats in their side to ensure this tie still has a distance to travel before anyone can relax.

Rangers deserve so much credit for the manner with which they are taking on these challenges.

The first 10 minutes were tricky to say the least as Red Star showed straight away how dangerous they are on the break.

There was a nervousness around the stadium as the Serbs carried a bit of cut and thrust into a series of attacks. But almost at an instant when Rangers scored the opener, that unease evaporated.

The fans settled, the players grew into the game and again showed how exceptional they can be in Europe.
