Allan McGregor kicks off Rangers contract talks and keeper is to also be offered Ibrox coaching chance

Rangers have now kicked off talks with Allan McGregor over a one-year contract extension.

And Record Sport understands there would be a coaching element, similar to striker Jermain Defoe when he extended 12 months ago, to any deal struck between the two parties.

It’s also believed McGregor may not be guaranteed the No. 1 position with Jon McLaughlin also in contention for that position.

The veteran would instead be one of the back-ups to McLaughlin, or any incoming keeper, along with Robby McCrorie.

However, the 40-year-old’s vast experience is seen as being vital to the Ibrox side as well as his knowledge of the club.

McGregor has spent 15 years as part of the first time squad over two spells after coming through the youth ranks.

His time at the club looked to be up when he was given the dying minutes of the Scottish Cup Final win over Hearts.

But after fellow veteran Steven Davis was handed a new deal, the club have now progressed negotiations with McGregor.

Sporting director Ross Wilson is now in discussions with McGregor after Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst hinted at a deal for his keeper at the end of the season.

The Dutchman, speaking in the final week of the campaign, said: “You always need a balance and mix between experienced players and talents.

“We’re sitting down with all the experienced players after the season.”
