All the changes to flight and travel rules in 2024 including liquid rules and EU ‘visa’

There are some huge changes to travel rules happening in 2024, including what we can carry in our hand luggage and how Brits enter Europe. It’s expected that more of us will be travelling abroad next year as flight numbers reach near pre-pandemic highs despite the rising cost of tickets.

The number of flights globally have been increasing over the 2000s, reaching a high of 38.9 million in 2019, before slumping to 16.9 million in 2020. But it’s due to hit 34.4 million in 2023 and grow further next year.

In autumn 2024 a new entry/exit system (EES) is set to be brought in and will apply to any non-EU citizens travelling into EU countries. The digital process will include registering the person’s name, their type of the travel document, fingerprints and captured facial images, and the date and place of entry and exit. Although the system is being brought in with the aim to save time, Brits have been warned that they could end up facing delays and long queues.

The system was due to be implemented in 2022, and then May 2023, and then delayed again until the end of 2023. However, EES is not now expected until 2024, possibly to be introduced after the Paris Olympics in the Summer. There are fears it could create chaos at the borders due to the increased checks and technology issues. The
