All Creatures Great and Small's Nicholas Ralph details shift after massive character's exit

The beloved series, All Creatures Great and Small, had fans experience a bittersweet finale last year as they watched the central character James Herriot (portrayed by Nicholas Ralph) embrace fatherhood for the first time on Channel 5.

While there were moments of tears, humour, and genuine emotion throughout the season, viewers couldn't help but notice that something was amiss following Tristan Farnon's (played by Callum Woodhouse) departure.

Nicholas Ralph shared insights into how the cast felt about the absence while featuring on the Masterpiece Studio podcast.

The latest series introduced new faces to Skeldale House, but still, audiences longed for the beloved Tristan who had departed to serve in the war. Nicholas acknowledged there was a notable silence, reports the Express.

He commented: "I mean, Tristan is a massive character in the show and Callum is a massive character in our lives, on set and off set when we're all up in Harrogate. So yeah, there was a Tristan and Callum-shaped hole in both those scenarios. But, it did just kind of lent us in more to what was happening in the world at that time."

The alteration in cast also changed the household dynamics in an intriguing way, Nicholas revealed. Further discussing the shift, he said: "It meant the funny one, to use a kinda base term, was gone. So someone else had the opportunity to be the funny one."

Season four of the beloved series introduced Richard Carmody, portrayed by Jamie Anthony-Rose, as Tristan's stand-in. Nicholas praised Jamie's seamless integration into the show, remarking on how quickly he became part of the family.
