Alistair Johnston sparks fresh Celtic injury fear as defender MIA for Canada despite Jesse Marsch assurance

Celtic star Alistair Johnston missed out on Canada's goalless draw with Mexico amid fresh concerns over his fitness.

The right-back was forced off during Canada's 2-1 friendly win over the USA last week - but following the game boss Jesse Marsch moved to reassure fans and Brendan Rodgers over the hamstring knock. He said following the full-time whistle: “Alistair said he felt a little bit of tightness in his hamstring and he felt it was smarter to step out. I am hopeful that he will be okay."

However, the hope of the former Leeds United boss didn't help Johnston in the end - as he missed out on the final friendly fixture before the end of the international break. Reports in Canada say the 25-year-old left the camp early to receive further assessment on the knock back at Celtic before the return of Scottish Premiership action for the Hoops on Saturday.

Hearts will visit Celtic Park and fans will be desperate to see Johnston in the starting line-up after an impressive start to the campaign. Anthony Ralston, who started for Scotland in their Nations League defeats to Poland and Portugal, will be on stand-by as the only recognised first-team option at right-back.
