Alisa Camplin breaks down in tears over ‘family magic’ behind Jakara Anthony’s Winter Olympics gold medal

Australian gold medallists Alisa Camplin and Lydia Lassila have welcomed Jakara Anthony into their exclusive club on a triumphant night at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The champion skiers shared an emotional embrace before Camplin broke down in tears during an interview with Channel 7 to mark Anthony’s victory in Sunday night’s moguls final.

Anthony, 23, led the two-day moguls competition through every round and then scored 83.09 points to comfortably win the six-woman super final.

Her victory ended a long wait for Australia’s next gold medallist alongside Lassila, Torah Bright, Dale Begg-Smith, Camplin and Steven Bradbury.

“I’ve been waiting 12 years for this Olympic gold medal drought to be over!” Lassila said on Channel 7.

A shocked Anthony replied: “Has it been 12? I haven’t even...”

“I don’t want to be the last Olympic champion, and from one Olympic champion to the other - congratulations, mate,” Lassila said.

“Welcome to the club.”

Lassila, in Beijing as a member of the Channel 7 commentary team, was in tears as she hugged assistant chef de mission - and Anthony’s mentor - Camplin after the final.

“My goodness, this is such a special moment for Jakara, for Australia,” Camplin said.

“She’s just an absolute champion. She’s worked so hard for this. So steely under pressure. I’m just so incredibly proud.”

Anthony is Australia’s fourth champion in freestyle skiing and the second to win moguls gold, after Begg-Smith at Turin 2006.

She finished a surprise fourth as a 19-year-old at PyeongChang 2018 but wasn’t driven by that near miss, having felt she skied to her potential at the time.
