Alfredo Morelos is halfway out Rangers door but flourishing Antonio Colak shows what the future holds - Barry Ferguson

Antonio Colak has been a bit of a head scratcher as a Rangers striker. He knows where the back of the net is. That’s for sure.

But when the Croatian arrived at Ibrox last summer I must admit I expected him to be a lot more than just a penalty box poacher. Maybe I’m just a bit greedy but I want more than just goals from my centre forward. The funny thing is, I remember watching him play against my old club for Malmo in the Champions League qualifiers and thinking he stood out like a sore thumb in both legs.

Yes, he scored twice at Ibrox which made sure he caught the eye. But it was his link up play and movement which really impressed me over both games. So, as harsh as it may sound, I’ve felt a little bit surprised by the player I’ve seen in a blue shirt since the start of the season. He’s certainly not been the all round No.9 I thought Rangers were getting.

Which is why I’m so intrigued by the way Colak has looked over the last two games, since Michael Beale gave him another chance to lead the line at the expense of Alfredo Morelos. The manager did say the other day that Colak is now injury free and has been showing a lot more energy in training.

And I’m starting to wonder if the guy we were waiting for is finally coming to the party. It’s a strange one. You certainly can’t argue with his numbers and he left Easter Road with another double on Wednesday night.

And, even when the team was up and down under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, I always felt he was prepared to work hard and put in a shift for the team. And yet I was never really convinced that he was going to keep Morelos out of the team in the long term because so many parts of his game were lacking in quality. Moves would break down when the ball went into his feet.
