Alex Albon recovering after post-operative complications following appendicitis

Alex Albon was transferred to intensive care following surgery after suffering from appendicitis with him having respiratory failure, though he is now thankfully on the mend.

Alex felt unwell on Saturday morning and after consulting both the FIA medical team and professionals at a local hospital, it was discovered that he was suffering from appendicitis.

That meant he’d play no further part in the Italian Grand Prix weekend as Nyck de Vries stood in and the Thai driver would undergo surgery on Saturday lunchtime.

Whilst the operation was a success, the Williams man suffered ‘unexpected post-operative anaesthetic complications’ and that led to him suffering from respiratory failure, which saw him transferred to intensive care.

Thankfully, he is now in a much better condition and is expected to make a full recovery, with Williams’ statement confirming that he has full focus on driving at the Singapore Grand Prix in just under three weeks from now.

A statement from the team read on Monday:

“Further to Alex Albon’s diagnosis of appendicitis on the morning of Saturday 10 September, he was admitted to San Gerardo hospital for treatment. He underwent a successful laparoscopic surgery on Saturday lunchtime.

“Following surgery, Alex suffered with unexpected post-operative anaesthetic complications which led to respiratory failure, a known but uncommon complication. He was re-intubated and transferred to intensive care for support. 

“He made excellent progress overnight and was able to be removed from mechanical ventilation yesterday morning. He has now been transferred to a general ward and is expected to return home tomorrow. There were no other complications.
