Alex Albon gives health update after returning to cockpit following appendicitis

Alex Albon has given an update on his health after returning to the cockpit following on from his recovery from appendicitis at the Italian GP.

The Thai/British driver fell ill on Saturday morning in Monza and required surgery to remove his appendix, before he then had to be placed in intensive care and on a ventilator after suffering respiratory failure, following post-anaesthetic complications.

He did, however, make a swift recovery from that point and was back home in Monaco on the Tuesday after the race weekend, and would naturally have started thinking about getting back driving in Singapore.

Indeed, that is what he has managed to do with a mammoth effort to get back fit for one of the most gruelling races of the year and, after competing in both FP1 and FP2 and coming 16th in both sessions on Friday at the Marina Bay circuit, he gave an update on how he was feeling:

“I’m feeling okay out there today despite everything that’s gone on and think I’m coping better than I expected.

“We had a good amount of long runs but know it’s a quarter of what we’ll be doing come Sunday, so I’ll take advantage of the rest tomorrow.

It feels okay when I’m in the car, generally speaking. It’s more just the heat!

“When you get out, you can feel that it’s obviously physical. But I feel like there are no big issues so I’m feeling pretty good.”

This is really positive to hear from Albon and it should not be played down in terms of what he is achieving this weekend.

As he mentions, the big test of the full Grand Prix – one of the longest and hottest of the year – awaits on Sunday but he has made a solid start to the weekend will look to build on that today.
